Serenade of Memories

On Saturday July 20th, 2024 Tonbridge Lions once again sponsored the delightful “Musical Memories” Sing-a-Long -Choir, entertaining a large audience at the Methodist Church.

It was a lovely afternoon of nostalgia for what is becoming a very popular and welcome annual event. The pleasure the choir and the audience get from this performance is palpable. The songs brought back wonderful memories and the audience simply wanted to join in, especially when brilliantly accompanied by Chris Coverly.

Diana Gibb’s rendition of ‘We’ll Gather Lilacs” was very moving, and the welcome contribution once again by the Hartlip Singers always brings a touch of class to the event. At the break a delicious afternoon cream tea was provided by the Ladies of Tonbridge Lions Club.

It was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon and a big “Thank You” goes to all concerned, including the Tonbridge Friendly Dementia Community, and the Tonbridge Methodist Church. Same time same place next year!

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

The Christmas Spirit was very evident at Tonbridge Methodist Church, Higham Lane, on Saturday December 16th.

The Musical Memories Sing-A-Long Choir treated us to a wonderful Christmas Concert. Everyone came suitably dressed in Christmas attire and the range of Carols sung covered all the Christmas emotions.

Tonbridge Lions and Tonbridge Dementia Friendly Society (Tonbridge & Malling DFC) hosted the afternoon and it was wonderful to see so many supporters and family members in the hall.

Soloists included Diana Gibb, a firm favourite of the choir and Richard Hill the musical director.

The Hartlip Singers, also supporters of the event, summoned up the mood when they sang the carol ‘It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

We were treated to refreshments by the Lions’ Ladies who added to the flavour of the season.

A Big Thank You to All concerned for starting the Christmas Season in Style.

The concept of using music to help trigger the recall of those with memory difficulties has been around for a while. There was a ‘singing for the brain’ group organised by the Alzheimer’s Society which ran in Southborough for some time.  Sadly it closed due to funding issues.  Music is such a powerful therapy for so many older people, not just those living with dementia. So Christine Parker of Tonbridge Dementia Friendly Community was overjoyed when Tonbridge Lion Richard and his wife Julie approached her and asked if there was a need in Tonbridge for a music group of this type.

The following a "trial run"the first session was held on 17 Oct 2019 and the group met every fortnight until the COVID pandemic prevented gatherings.

On Thursday 4 November 2021 we restarted our Musical Memories at Tonbridge Methodist Church. Lion President Richard Hill leads the singing whilst Chris Coverly on the keyboard provided the music.

During the summer of 2022 a concert was held and recently a Christmas Carol Concert,
