The popular Tonbridge Lions Triathlon returned to the prestigious Tonbridge School Sports Centre on the early May Bank Holiday, drawing nearly 260 athletes for a day of multisport competition and community spirit.
In cool and mostly dry conditions, participants of all abilities took on one of five available events: the Standard Triathlon (800m swim, 50km cycle, 10km run), the Sprint Triathlon (half distances), a Relay Triathlon for teams of three, and two alternative formats – the Aquathlon (swim and run) and the Aquabike (swim and cycle).
Despite logistical hurdles, including road closures on the cycle route and a persistent traffic light issue near Hilden Manor, the event was expertly managed by a dedicated team of volunteers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all. The event was officially overseen by two representatives from British Triathlon, whose positive feedback highlighted the high standards of organisation and safety. On-site catering, courtesy of Jo and her partner from ‘Naked and Ready Foods’, kept competitors and spectators well-fed throughout the day.
Support from the Air Cadets and Police Cadets was instrumental, assisting with setup, course management, and takedown. “This event couldn’t happen without the energy and commitment of our incredible volunteers,” said Race Director, Lion Trevor Dalladay. “We are grateful to all who gave their time and skills to make this day such a success.” All proceeds from the Triathlon will go to local charities and good causes, distributed by the Tonbridge Lions Club.
