The Tonbridge Lions car tour was successfully completed on Sunday 20th of July. As the cars and drivers gathered at Tonbridge School the weather did not look great but the rain was never heavy and by the time we got to the lunch stops it had dried up. As usual, The Mayor waved the cars off on their way out of the school. Despite the weather, only 1 car failed to assemble and everyone made it to the lunch stop and back safely. The only issue we had was a roadblock that had been introduced overnight on Saturday night / Sunday morning in Horsemonden but a Lion was on hand to re-direct most of the drivers and the diversion only cut off a small section off the route.
Once a shortage of chairs had been resolved, Blackstocks was excellent with a really generous spread of delicious food available for everyone to enjoy. We will definitely be using this as a future lunch stop.
The route back was shorter and more direct but used similar roads - trying to minimise narrow sections and bad potholes but follow nice open roads suited to the more sporty cars but quiet enough for the older cars to pootle along without a queue of impatient other road users behind them.
Finishing off back at the school, the traditional cream tea was available with delicious scones with cream and strawberry jam, washed down with copious cups of tea and coffee.
Of course, the most important aspect, the tour raised over £1,500 towards a local family purchasing a specialised wheelchair for their severely disabled young son. I can only repeat the heartfelt thanks to all the participants and especially the generous sponsors - Sevens and Classics, Hadlow Stair Garage, The Mason Foundation
and Fred. Olsen Travel who make this event the success that it is.
Thanks must finally to Mike Edwards and James Lark who organised and ran the event and all the other Lions who helped out at the school and lunch venue.
